El Cabo Mexican Restaurant
About This Spot
Stepping into El Cabo Mexican Restaurant in Walnut Cove feels like finding a familiar neighborhood gem where the hum of casual conversation and the warm, inviting colors set a relaxed and welcoming tone. It’s the kind of place that encourages a slow-paced experience — whether you’re catching up with friends on the outdoor patio when the weather is just right or settling in for a quietly satisfying meal at one of their comfortable booths indoors.
The atmosphere strikes a balance between lively and laid-back, with enough buzz to feel vibrant but also room for familiar comfort. The decor offers cheerful nods to Mexican culture that invite you to pause and take in the little details without ever feeling overwhelming. Staff members move with a friendly attentiveness that, while sometimes stretched during busy moments, resonates with the restaurant’s genuine spirit of hospitality.
Food here becomes part of the experience rather than just a meal—whether it’s the satisfying crunch of shrimp tacos or the rich, comforting warmth of a chicken fajita quesadilla. There’s a laid-back joy in sharing plates like chimichangas or indulging in the sweet finish of churros that feels unpretentious and thoughtfully done. Drinks from their bar, like the house margarita, bring an easy-going flair, pairing well with the mixture of smoky, fresh, and zesty flavors you’ll find on the menu.
El Cabo welcomes a mix of locals and visitors who appreciate the straightforward, honest flavors and the comfortable, sometimes spirited rhythm of a classic Mexican bar and restaurant. It’s a spot where a casual lunch stretches into a late afternoon of stories and laughter, and a dinner can effortlessly flow into a relaxed evening with good company.

I quit eating here over a year ago because the service was so bad with decent but not great food. I decided to try it again ( A Saturday at 12:30pm). Food was good but 1 waitress for whole main part of restaurant. Halfway through eating I moved my tea glass to outside edge of table so she could see it was empty. Waitress walked by twice (never looked at me when I tried to get her attention) and hostess walked by three times without looking or stopping. It took 10 minutes to get a refill and by that point I was done eating. Will I eat there again, probably not in the restaurant because of the still bad service, but maybe takeout.

Lunch was good and the servers all wore smiles! This isn't the world's greatest Mexican restaurant but it is good and consistent. The decor is fun but not overwhelming and there's an outdoor patio we'll use when it's cooler!

We've had lots of good luck with Mexican restaurants in the Winston-Salem area. This one had slightly different specials although we went with just the California burrito and a taco. Both were very good. Not the huge portions that we found at the last place but still plenty of food and a reasonable price.
